In today’s uncertain world, personal and professional security isn’t just about carrying a firearm it’s about being able to use it effectively when every fraction of a second counts. At A-TAC Academy in Oklahoma City, we train hundreds of responsible citizens, security professionals, and armed guards every month. The one skill that separates those who survive from those who hesitate is pistol marksmanship.
Poor marksmanship doesn’t just mean missed shots it can mean collateral damage, legal liability, or failure to stop a threat. That’s why we dedicate entire courses (like our Fundamentals of Pistol Marksmanship) to building rock-solid shooting skills from the ground up. Below, we break down every fundamental and show why the legendary Dot Torture Drill is one of the most valuable tools in your training arsenal.
The 5 Core Fundamentals of Pistol Marksmanship
Master these five fundamentals and you will shoot tighter groups, faster, and more consistently under stress. Ignore any one of them and your performance falls apart.
Grip / Hand Position Your grip is your foundation. A proper two-handed grip creates a stable platform that controls recoil and keeps the muzzle steady.
High, firm grip with the web of your strong hand as high as possible on the backstrap.
Support hand wrapped tightly around the strong hand with thumbs forward or stacked.
Equal pressure from both hands not a death grip, but firm enough to prevent the gun from shifting in your hands during recoil. Why it matters for security: A weak or inconsistent grip turns a 3-second engagement into a 6-second one and increases the chance of malfunctions or missed shots when adrenaline hits.
Sight Alignment & Sight Picture Proper alignment means the front sight is centered in the rear sight notch with equal light on both sides. Sight picture is simply placing that aligned sight system exactly where you want the bullet to go. For defensive shooting we focus on front-sight focus the target may be slightly blurry, but the front sight must be crystal clear. Why it matters: In low-light or high-stress situations (common in real security incidents), perfect sight alignment is what puts rounds on target instead of over or under.
Breathing Control Uncontrolled breathing moves your entire upper body.
Take a natural breath in, exhale halfway, and hold briefly while pressing the trigger (the “respiratory pause”).
Never hold your breath for long periods it causes tremors and tunnel vision. Why it matters: During a real confrontation your heart rate is elevated. Learning to control breathing keeps your sights steady when everything else is chaotic.
Trigger Pull / Trigger Control This is the most common reason for missed shots.
Press the trigger straight to the rear with the pad of your index finger (not the joint).
Smooth, steady pressure no jerking, slapping, or anticipation.
Reset the trigger on the forward stroke for faster follow-up shots. Why it matters: A bad trigger pull can move the muzzle several inches at 7 yards. In security work, that’s the difference between a center-mass hit and a complete miss.
Follow-Through After the shot breaks, keep your grip, sights, and focus exactly where they were when the trigger broke.
Hold the sight picture for a full second after the shot.
Reset the trigger while maintaining sight alignment. Why it matters: Follow-through prevents “flinching” on subsequent shots and builds the muscle memory needed for rapid, accurate strings of fire.
Why the Dot Torture Drill Is One of the Most Valuable Fundamentals Builders in Existence
The Dot Torture Drill (sometimes called the “10-Dot Drill”) is a simple but brutally effective training tool that forces you to execute every single fundamental perfectly, shot after shot.
How it works (the exact version we use at A-TAC):
Print or draw a sheet with 10 small 1-inch circles (or use our A-TAC Dot Torture target).
Start at 3 meters, then progress to 5 meters.
Each dot requires a specific number of shots with no time limit you must hit inside the circle or the drill fails.
You shoot all 10 dots in sequence without resting the gun or resetting your position.

Why Dot Torture is so valuable for security-focused shooters:
It exposes every weakness instantly. If your grip is shifting, your trigger pull is jerky, or your sight alignment is off, you will see holes outside the dots immediately.
Builds perfect trigger control under fatigue. By the 6th or 7th dot your hands are tired — exactly what happens in a real defensive encounter.
Trains focus and follow-through. You cannot “pray and spray.” Every single shot must be deliberate and perfect.
Zero-cost, maximum return. You can run Dot Torture with as few as 50–100 rounds and dramatically improve your groups in one session.
Scalable for all skill levels. Beginners start at 3 meters; advanced students add movement, reloads, or timed versions.
Directly translates to real-world security performance. The precision and consistency you build here is what allows you to make accurate shots while moving, communicating, or under stress skills we drill in our Defensive Pistol Course.
At A-TAC we require every student in our Fundamentals of Pistol Marksmanship course to pass the final Dot Torture qualification at 3 meters before they receive their certificate. Students who complete it consistently tell us their groups shrink by 50% or more in a single day.
